Design Vision

Transforming an outdoor canvas into a living sanctuary

This proposal outlines a comprehensive landscape transformation for the Gaurao Chaudhari residence — reimagining every corner of the outdoor space with considered materiality, purposeful planting, and cohesive connectivity between zones.

From the pergola patio through the central lawn to the tree-shaded seating retreat, each intervention is designed to layer aesthetics with function. Stone, mulch, gravel, and verdant planting work in harmony to create a private garden of refined character.

Six distinct zones are addressed: the patio pergola border, the playset enclosure, the garage hardscape, the tree circle garden, the illuminated seating retreat, and an optional boundary plantation — all knitted together by a continuous walking trail.

01

Refining the outdoor room

The existing patio is in good overall condition and the pergola structure is sound. The opportunity lies in elevating the space from functional to genuinely beautiful through layered detailing.

Pergola Bordering Adding a defined border around the pergola perimeter to create visual grounding and architectural presence.
Pathway Through the Lawn A walking trail drawn from the patio towards the seating area through the centre of the lawn — creating flow and destination.
Pathway Material Options Separated stone planks, or a trail of stone chips bounded by a fine datum edge — elegant and low-maintenance.

02

A defined world for play

With hedges removed and the playset repositioned, the zone needs a sense of containment and identity — transforming what could feel exposed into a thoughtfully framed, seclusion-within-reach space.

Segment Enclosure A defined boundary around the playset so it reads as a purposeful zone rather than an afterthought.
Trail Extension Extending the walking trail towards the playset — stitching all zones together.
Grass Expansion Extending turf to the sandstone boundary for a seamless, lush green groundplane.

Stone, light & structure

The side yard adjacent to the white garage is an underutilised canvas. A stone chip hardscape treatment with sculptural globe lighting transforms this utilitarian edge into a complementary aesthetic layer for the entire garden.

Stone Chip Ground Treatment A textured gravel and stone chip surface providing low-maintenance, high-aesthetic ground coverage.
Light Globe Accents Warm globe luminaires among the stone — creating atmospheric evening ambience.
Buxus Shrubs Throughout Clipped Buxus spheres through the entire garden — providing year-round green structure and formal rhythm.

04

Organic forms around the trees

The two existing ornamental trees are the garden's most characterful feature. Organic-shaped ground cuts around each tree, filled with shaped rocks or circular concrete stepping pads and mulch, create a destination worth arriving at.

Organic Shaped Tree Surrounds Free-form cut edges around the tree bases — a softer, naturalistic counter to the garden's more structured elements.
Rock or Concrete Pad Stepping Stones Shaped local rocks or circular cast-concrete pads set into mulch — connecting the tree zone to the seating area.
Seating Integration Seating placed within the tree circle, shaded and framed — serving both the lawn and the garden beyond.

05

Two visions for the ornamental trees

The trees present a choice between two distinct aesthetic directions — both beautiful, but in different registers. The option selected will define the garden's overall character at night.

Option A

Fairy Light Canopy

Wrapping the tree canopies in delicate fairy lights creates a romantic, immersive evening atmosphere. Works beautifully alongside the organic tree circle concept from Section 04 — the two form a cohesive composition.

Option B

Hedge & Ground Cover Boundary

A clipped hedge or ground cover boundary around the trees creates a more formal, architectural definition. Best when the tree circle composition is not pursued — the two approaches should be considered mutually exclusive.

06

Stone textures & water

The shaded corner near the trees is the garden's natural sanctuary — the logical destination for an intimate seating space. Stone or metal-framed outdoor furniture anchors this zone, backed by planting that merges with the broader garden.

A water spout feature on a raised platform introduces sound, movement, and focal drama without dominating the space.

Mixed Stone Pebble Texture Contrasting coarse and fine stone pebbles create visual richness without the need for colour.
Water Spout on Raised Platform A bowl-style water feature elevated above ground — architectural and auditory focal point.
Planting Behind Seating Layered planting at the rear of the seating zone to soften boundaries and blur the line between garden and enclosure.

Optional Enhancement

07

The softened perimeter

Along the rear fence line, mulch or stone chip beds with columnar evergreens and Buxus spheres create a living privacy screen — softening the hard boundary and giving the garden depth and enclosure.

This treatment is optional — it adds significant character if budget permits, but the garden reads beautifully without it too.

Mulch or Stone Chip Bed A contrasting ground material bed along the fence creates a clean separation from the lawn.
Columnar Evergreens Upright narrow-form trees planted in rhythm — creating vertical interest and privacy without lateral spread.
Integrated Path Lighting Slim bollard lights among the shrubs — practical and atmospheric, echoing the globe light language from Section 03.

Budget-Permitting Addition — Outdoor Kitchen / BBQ Station
If the project budget allows, a compact barbecue series can be installed along one wall of the patio — a small grill and cooking top built into a stone or brick surround. This transforms the patio from a dining space into a fully self-contained outdoor entertaining hub. Investment is moderate relative to the lifestyle uplift delivered.
